In our area of upstate NY there is a famous retired newscaster who, it turns out, needs to wear a hearing aid. Since this discovery, he has become a passionate spokesman for getting your hearing tested. Other celebrities, when they encounter a disease or need, especially when it strikes close to home, often get involved in promoting a cure or helping those so afflicted. That’s a very good thing.

Gaining experience with a hardship which others share makes one more sympathetic, and sensitive. Yet, not everyone who encounters such things can do something ‘big’ about it, like those celebrities can. And further, who is there to help with the hard, but common things of life? All those little problems that trouble relationships, or derail plans, or ensnare us in sin?

How happy I am to remind Christians of our Advocate in heaven, the Lord Jesus Christ! In the words of one NT passage, He is our “high priest” — sympathizing with us, and representing us to God the Father…..

HEBREWS 4:14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

I would be remiss if I did not point out the “us” and “we” of that passage refers only to those who have put their faith and trust in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. He only represents His people; those outisde His flock must fend for themselves, and have no advocate with God the Father. But good news: He is still adding to His flock! Pray to Him; profess faith in Him. Find forgiveness of sin, and a faithful Shepherd for life! Let me know if I can help…
