The puritan pastor Thomas Manton urges caution in judging the character of a man other than in the light of every day deeds —
“We do not judge men’s complexions by the color they have when they sit before the fire. We cannot judge of a man by a fit and pang, when he is under the awe of an ordinance, or in good company; but when at all times he labors to keep up a warmth of heart towards God.”
