Weekly taste of Thomas Manton…

The keen puritan pastor wrote this while preaching on Psalm 119:5 —

“Wicked men may desire their own happiness, though not upon God’s terms. …Every man would be blessed, and go to heaven, if it were left up to his option and choice; he likes the END, but not the MEANS. There was not a murmuring Israelite, but would count Canaan a good land….”

Thomas Manton for Tuesday

The puritan pastor Thomas Manton urges caution in judging the character of a man other than in the light of every day deeds —

“We do not judge men’s complexions by the color they have when they sit before the fire. We cannot judge of a man by a fit and pang, when he is under the awe of an ordinance, or in good company; but when at all times he labors to keep up a warmth of heart towards God.”
