Should those disciples be doing that? asked some Pharisees, aiming to be critical of Jesus and condemn the behavior of His followers (see the first paragraph of Matthew 12). In His reply, Jesus bluntly asks (twice!), have you not read (in the Scripture)?
By so doing, Jesus not only rebukes those who thought wrongly about His disciples, but points all of us to the one sure and faithful standard, the Scriptures (the Bible). He directs all of us to evaluate actions and behaviors by the Word of God.
How true it is,
Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.~ Matthew 4:4
How important it is to be reading your Bible daily, to grow in knowledge, understanding and wisdom. Or would you rather make mistaken judgements and later (eventually) face the blunt question of Jesus for yourself: Have you not read?
