I am in Lakeshore, Mississippi, with a team of volunteers from Clifton Park, NY, to help victims of Hurricane Katrina rebuild their homes — and their lives. With me are my kids, Andrew, Kathryn & Matthew, as well as Brian MacArevey, Matt & Ben Hopkins, Anthony Romano, Walter & Seth Dick, and three friends from another NY church (John Sireci and sons Isaac and Luke). We drove here in my large Ford van, logging 833 miles on Saturday (over 15 hours), before an overnight in Gastonia, NC (with the Tyrees). After breakfast and worship on Sunday we added another 700 miles (12+ hours) before arriving here around 9:30 PM CST. We thank all who prayed, and our gracious Lord, for a safe journey across so many miles. Our group is only one-tenth of a larger 150 member team here this week. They are mostly reformed baptists (via ARBCA), organized by Grace Baptist Church of Carlisle, PA. Although it has been more than two years since the hurricane, there are so many homes is disrepair, and whole neighborhoods that look almost freshly damaged. Our host, Pastor Don Elborne of Lakeshore Baptist Church, says at least 43 residents of this neighborhood lost their lives in Katrina. Since that day, however, this local church, and an army of volunteers from across the country have rehabilitated over 100 homes and built many new ones. This week our crews are starting new homes #25 and #26 for local residents. The church property, only one mile from the Gulf waters, itself looks like a major construction site. Accommodations are spartan (and you cannot drink the tap water, or even use it for brushing teeth), but the food is good, hot and plentiful. You can see a lot at the church web site: www.rebuillakeshore.com.Lots of stories to tell and praises to share — most will have to wait until we are home. But if I can type them out, then upload them at the church office, I will try to enter more here on my Breadline blog.Pray for safety for all the workers, and for spiritually successful home visitations (myself and two other pastors).
